Visit Report on Pharmacovigilance Awareness Program

Organized by: GLOBAL COLLEGE OF PHARMACY KAHNPUR KHUI, ANANDPUR SAHIB

Participants: Dr. Sanjiv Duggal, V.N Malhotra, Prof. Kavita Kumari, Manjit Singh, Satish Kumar.

 

On 12/09/2024, a team from GLOBAL COLLEGE OF PHARMACY KAHNPUR KHUI, ANANDPUR SAHIB visited Govt Senior Secondary School Kahnpur Khui to conduct an awareness session on pharmacovigilance, aiming to educate students on medication safety and promote our college's healthcare programs.

Introduction:

Pharmacovigilance: Pharmacovigilance (PV) is the science and activities related to the detection, assessment, understanding, and prevention of adverse effects or any other drug-related problems.

Aims:

1. To improve patient care and safety in relation to the use of medicines, and all medical and paramedical interventions.

2. To improve public health and safety in relation to the use of medicines.

3. To contribute to the assessment of benefit, harm effectiveness and risk of medicines, encouraging their safe, rational and more effective use.

4. To promote understanding, education and clinical training in pharmacovigilance and its effective communication to health professional and the public.

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs)

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) are unwanted or harmful reactions experienced by a patient after taking a medication, vaccine, or other therapeutic agent.

Characteristics of ADRs:

1. Unwanted or unexpected effect

2. Occurs at normal therapeutic doses

3. Associated with the use of a medication or therapeutic agent

4. May be reversible or irreversible.

 

Importance of ADR reporting:

1. Improves drug safety

2. Enhances patient care

3. Supports pharmacovigilance

4. Informs regulatory decisions

5. Promotes public health

Adverse Event (AE): A negative experience encountered by an individual during the course of a clinical trial, which may or may not be associated with a drug.

Serious Adverse Event (SAE): Any adverse event which is fatal, life-threatening, Permanently disabling or which results in hospitalisation. 

 

Objectives

1. Raise awareness among students regarding pharmacovigilance.

2. Encourage interactions and discussions on medication safety.

3. Promote our college and its healthcare educational programs.

 

Activities Conducted

1. PowerPoint Presentation:

    - Definition and importance of pharmacovigilance.

    - Common adverse drug reactions and reporting mechanisms.

    - Real-life examples and case studies.

2. Interactive Session:

    - Q&A session.

    - Group discussions on pharmacovigilance applications.

Outcomes

1. Enhanced awareness among students regarding pharmacovigilance.

2. Encouraged interest in healthcare careers.

3. Successful promotion of our college's programs.

 

 

Conclusion

Pharmacovigilance studies play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficacy of pharmaceutical products. The pharmacovigilance awareness program was a success, achieving its objectives and fostering a better understanding of medication safety among school students. The conclusions drawn from these studies have significant implications for public health, regulatory decision-making, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Future Plans

1. Conduct regular awareness sessions in schools.

2. Collaborate with educational institutions for healthcare workshops.

3. Develop educational materials on pharmacovigilance.
